4.5 stars out of 5

  • Standalone fantasy set in a world where people are mostly horrible making even worse decisions, with a flavor for good versus evil and blurred lines and a fully fleshed out world building and, to be even more precise, magic system!

    • there is even an order of paladin-like individuals who are supposed to uphold the higher values of lord Celestine

      A few highlights

  • Sarcasm/irony leaping off the page

  • The good versus evil is done really well, introduced with clear lines dividing them and then blurring all of it

  • Interesting characters - interesting point of view and ability to develop

    • the characters also interacted well enough among each other and they complemented their skills, abilities and personalities in great ways

Tropes/themes that work for me

  • Hard magic system - and it is fantastic

    • including the use of blood magic in an unusual way

    • it also include magical tools that can unlock other abilities and the use of this tool felt very fulfilling overall!

  • Beauty in unexpected places
