The Vagrant Gods
Why is the Vagrant Gods on my TBR?
There are a few elements that add up (usually at different times) until they reach the critical amount to make the book or the series noticeable.
First and foremost there are items about the book and the author that helped pushing this series in the “VERY INTERESTING” (yes, that’s how my brain communicates these topics, yelling) category.
The Vagrant Gods is an epic fantasy series; the moment I see a book in this category, my interest is immediately peaked. Furthermore, the blurb suggests revenge and revolution as drivers for the plot - not to mention that the blurb had a minimal vibe of The Count of Montecristo for me but we’ll see if this is purely my mind playing games on me.
Furthermore, in the article Orbit published (here) announcing the acquisition of this trilogy, they refer to “otherworldly assassins, dying gods and false emperors”. All themes and tropes in fantasy (or any other story) that just appeals to me.
While I confess this would be a “new-to-me” author, David Dalglish is also a very prolific fantasy author and I am looking forward to adding him to my favorite authors list, running the risk that I will want to read all his prior books. But one “problem” at a time!
There are two more aspects that appeal to me and push me to adding the book in the TBR pile (in fact, it is even in the might be read list of January 2023!): the covers to both The Bladed Faith (book one) and the Sapphire Altar (book two) look appealing. I love the mask of the first book and I love the expression of the character on book two. Plus, this is a trilogy so book three must be around the corner (one year, hopefully and not more!).
Additional points for this series
While all of the above is more than sufficient to putting the book and the series on my radar, the reality is that many books and series have these pros working for them but they go - unfortunately for me - unnoticed.
So, I have to thank Rodger from Rodger’s Reads, to me a BookTuber with a different and exciting perspective on fantasy, for having brought The Bladed Faith to my attention! So far, his recommendations have been quite great suggestions for my reading taste so I am looking forward to seeing if this is another hit!
One more note: while researching the book on Goodreads, Goodreads associated The Bladed Faith to a few authors and series I love: from the Covenant of Steel of Anthony Ryan (one of my all time favorite fantasy author), to the War for the Rose Throne by Peter McLean (one of my favorite series of 2022) to the Bloodsworn Saga by John Gwynne (an author I trust and read!).
