Project Superheroes (the Supes project)
Why I like superheroes?
Superheroes have been a constant presence in my life. I remember reading the X-Men (mostly because they were the outcasts and I wanted to be part of this world pretty badly) and loving everything about them.
I also grew up with Greek and Roman mythology and these stories almost felt like superheroes stories, especially when Odysseus would come home and outsmart everyone or when Jason and the 12 argonauts stole the golden fleece. Now these mythological stories are more complex than some superheroes stories; yet, many superheroes spoke to a few generations and helped them to process feelings or simply offer a distraction from what happens in their real lives. The kids in Stranger Things are one of the best representations of this experience. Also, the adults in The Big Bang Theory are perfect representation of enjoyment of comics.
My experience with exploring superheroes is old and new; I did not continue to explore these stories while I was studying in university and stared my professional career. I feel that I failed myself and I did not get to experience these adventures at a moment in time when I needed this distraction.
The world helped me getting back into this journey though: the first superheroes movies starting coming out, from Spiderman to the X-Men. And I started resuming my interest in superheroes stories.
The more profound reason
The most important reason I love superheroes stories is representation. I did not understand what that meant until recently. Role models, normalizing being different, knowing that there is someone else like you where you want to be. Kamala Khan is one of the most powerful examples of this: I love everything about how this superhero was born and I love how she became, very quickly, an absolute favorite. There is also Miles Morales; another character representing minorities and he was one of the most popular superheroes almost overnight.
This is what I love about these stories; I feel that I am represented in there. This is why I connected with the X-Men, they were the different ones, the one who did not fit. They found their own community (while I did not really find it until much later). This is what makes these stories wonderful, they are relatable!
Superheroes stories these days
These days, there is quite a lot of content around superheroes; the MCU (and I am one of the hardcore fans), The Boys, My Hero Academia, comics and more! There are so many different stories, so many characters, so many worlds, so many powers; the stories are told from many different points of view and with different tones and styles.
There are the serious stories, like with Captain America or Batman. There are the irreverent stories, like The Boys. There are the different voices telling stories, such as Kōhei Horikoshi and his My Hero Academia.
And I love many different stories and I cannot wait to share my experience living them. Or watching them. Or reading them! I cannot wait to share my ideas and opinions about the stories. I will be curating a list of superheroes related content and I cannot wait to put this together!
On top of that, in the next days, there are few shows that will be dropping and I cannot wait to have a bit more structured approach when it comes to superheroes content. We will start with Gen V (and there seems to be positive reviews about this series, which shocks me and makes me happier about watching this series); and we continue with one of my favorite Disney+ shows, with Loki and its season two.
So much content - and your suggestions!
There is a lot more content out there, from comics to manga to books and stories about superheroes. I cannot wait to explore these stories and share my thoughts and opinions about them.
And, in the spirit of collecting a pretty comprehensive list of superheroes related stories, what stories would you recommend to have in this list? Feel free to share and comment down below!
