Secret Invasion ep.2 - reaction

Disney’s poster for Secret Invasion

The second episode of Secret Invasion is quite intriguing to me. There are a lot of spy activities going on and a lot of interactions that are explained and discussed.

The plot advances overall and there are a few interesting things about Fury that we find out.

The episode is truly interesting; there is so much happening, slowly building the plot and I am genuinely waiting on what will happen next. There is so much potential and I am hoping this series does not squander it, as it has happened in a couple of MCU series before!

Beware, there are spoilers ahead!

Plot related items

Skrulls

First and foremost, we go back to the original issue that prompts the Skrull’s more extreme front: in 1997, Fury promises he and Carol Danvers will help the Skrulls find a new planet, as long as they would help him keep Earth safe. Many Skrulls are up for the challenge.

I am truly enjoying this premise and I am buying the decisions made so far from all the parties involved!

This is a story of misplaced individuals (and we find out that the reason that has happened is that Skrulls are too happy to engage in war rather than think about it) who are tired of being used as soldiers for someone’s war and intelligence. This is even more fascinating when Talos shares with Fury that Earth does not have a few Skrulls but about a million of them, with the exception of a small group that is out there in space (and I wonder what that means for the MCU and the space stories!). This actually leads into an interesting conversation about humanity and how humans struggle to coexist; how will humans accept a new alien species on Earth?

Gravik

Gravik becomes general of the Skrulls and he will have no supervision moving forward. Now, this was a nice little coup-d’etât; there was a strong plan in place early on and it was interesting how Gravik took control and the gravitas he has while carrying it out. The only negative for me is that we did not see the entire plot folding and we just saw the effects of it. The scary part is that the Skrulls are in control of a lot more than we thought (or that Fury thought!).

Rhodey

We finally see Rhodey talking more. There is a part of this chatting that really annoyed me; there was a strong American arrogance and lack of cooperation when it comes to international politics. Rhodey’s attitude and comments really pissed me off.

Also, Rhodey had an interesting conversation with Fury. We have partially seen this scene in the trailers and it is as compelling as it was in trailers, even more so with the entire scene in front of us.

With all of that said, in both instances, Rhodey’s behaviour feels a bit off. So if he a Skrull? And, if so, when was the real Rhodey replaced by the fake one?

Sonya and G’iah

Sonya is making interesting findings. Not only she is just SOOOOO cool (I want to learn doing business from her), she is also incredibly competent. Now, torture is a no-go no matter what but she is in a fictional story and she is clearly badass. And I cannot wait to see what else she has to offer. But also, is she a Skrull?

So far, I am a bit underwhelmed by G’iah but, if her story line goes to where I want it to go (disillusioned about Gravik, playing the mole for her father; but then, what is she has been a planted spy for Sonya all along? Both options makes me truly excited!), this is going to be huge!

Both of them are finally sharing what is coming (and we partially have seen it in the trailers): Superskrulls are happening! And there are the Daltons that are working on this; and it feels similar to what happened to Captain America, with a serum to make super soldiers. So are we getting a serum to make Superskrulls?

About Fury

His first training in interrogation comes from his own mother, with the game “Tell me something I don’t know”. I loved the story Fury tells us about the segregated train and how insightful Fury’s mother was. We already knew that his grandpa was a smart and kind man, ready for all type of issues that might come his way.

I truly loved his conversation with Rhodey and how he had to work hard for all the achievements that he did in his professional life, despite the difficulties of being a Black man. I loved everything about that conversation and it feels quite realistic today for women as well!

We also finds out that Fury cares at least for one of the Skrulls so much that he has married her! So did they have a child? Can they even have children? Is their adoptive child Gravik? I just want to know more about it!

Things to look forward to

First and foremost, Superskrulls (and we have seen in the trailers that we will have them); we have also seen part of the power-set: we have Groot (so elongation type of powers); we have Extrimis (Iron Man 3 is back!), and then we will also have ability to freeze (with the frost beast) and the strength powers of Cull Obsidian (one of the lieutenants of Thanos!). I cannot wait to see what this new mixture of powers look like!

Another aspect that gets me super excited is: are we getting an Avenger showing up? Maybe even Carol Danvers? We keep hearing both mentioned in the series; so who??? It could be Carol as the Marvels is a movie later in the year! Yet, I think if Captain America shows up, I think the internet will break!

Finally although it is unlikely we will get much in terms of resolution in this series; but what about Loki? I want to know more about the Skrulls that are with emperor Drogge’s colony!
