4 stars out of 5
Magic world building is still outstanding and it is used in a clever way, especially at the end of the events!
This is an action packed story, with a new villain front changing the landscape
The drive of this book is to be better for the people despite having lost an important sentimental and work ally
Some need to get rid of control that forces them to commit heinous crimes
Mephi is still the best character of the entire series!
Feel good ending
A few highlights
Dione is quite unique character - he needs to wrestle with a ton of difficult decisions, including betrayal of trust
Philine is finally a fleshed out character and her transformation and coming into power is wonderful
Ayesh makes her family come together, from Phalue and Ranami to Shark; they are one of the best families in fantasy!
Tropes/themes that work for me
Rebellion is still a key part of the story
Found family is an essential part of this story and it is wonderfully executed in a couple of different settings
Control and abuse are used very well in this book and it helps the story move along and provides for proper character development
this is true for at least two characters in this story, one being directly controlled and the other controlled through abuse of others
