4 stars out of 5

  • Magic world building is still outstanding and it is used in a clever way, especially at the end of the events!

  • This is an action packed story, with a new villain front changing the landscape

  • The drive of this book is to be better for the people despite having lost an important sentimental and work ally

  • Some need to get rid of control that forces them to commit heinous crimes

  • Mephi is still the best character of the entire series!

  • Feel good ending

A few highlights

  • Dione is quite unique character - he needs to wrestle with a ton of difficult decisions, including betrayal of trust

  • Philine is finally a fleshed out character and her transformation and coming into power is wonderful

  • Ayesh makes her family come together, from Phalue and Ranami to Shark; they are one of the best families in fantasy!

Tropes/themes that work for me

  • Rebellion is still a key part of the story

  • Found family is an essential part of this story and it is wonderfully executed in a couple of different settings

  • Control and abuse are used very well in this book and it helps the story move along and provides for proper character development

    • this is true for at least two characters in this story, one being directly controlled and the other controlled through abuse of others
