3.5 stars out of 5
Novel idea, with great descriptions with a bit too short execution; thinking about antiheroes dealing with their very human emotions.
A few highlights
Superpowers described in a very compelling way:
also the way people acquire powers is interesting, although not consistent from my point of view.
Connecting with Victor:
this part of the story is done with flying colors, I understand the needs and the wants of this character and why he does what he does. Not that he is predictable but he is consistent.
Eli Ever is also quite interesting (although he misses the depth that Victor has):
“A hero. Wasn’t he? Heroes saved the world from villains, from evil. Heroes sacrificed themselves to do it.” Schwab, V. E.. Vicious (p. 272). Titan Books. Kindle Edition.
Writing is quite evocative (always been V.E. Schwab’s superpower!).
Tropes/themes that work for me
Antiheroes are the protagonists (and it is a good take on antiheroes, however I wished for more character development, more character involvement, more consistent approach of the world building).
How powers are acquired was one of the most interesting aspects of the story (the entire sequence dedicated to understanding how to give people superpowers was top notch for me; superficial maybe but I loved everything about it):
in particular, I enjoyed the take on how the powers are developed (this a non-spoiler review so I cannot get in great detail).
