Voice of War by Zack Argyle

Book information

Voice of War by Zack Argyle (I accidentally went on the “about” section, and I laughed out loud looking at the mug)

Book one in the Threadlight series

Published first on the 1st of March 2020 by Zack Argyle himself (indie book!)

4 stars out of 5

  • Indie book introducing a simple yet clever magic system, a small yet powerful world building and a great amount of issues to deal with, such as:

    • life and death situations,

    • PTSD,

    • World ending.

A few highlights

  • Map art at the very beginning of the book is outstanding, simply so; art (including cover art!) by Ömer Burak Önal

  • This book was a finalist in the Self-Published Fantasy Blog-Off, which describes how good this book is,

    • even if I did not like it!

  • Relatively simple magic system with genius applications

    • Used to move through a city

    • Used also in situations that I did not anticipate and it felt fresh and unique

    • Visually clear, by using threads and colors; the visual representation on page was wonderful for visual representation in my head!

  • Loved the author’s preamble: all questions will be answered in time (and, having read the series, I think he is correct!).

  • The very first chapter is quite traumatic - and I do not think it would be fit for people who just had a child or, worse, lost one.

  • The ending is epic and it opens up to a great world building.

Tropes/themes that work for me

  • Family

    • there are different families and many relationships within a family in this story and they are all beautifully developed in this story!

      • Chrys and his wife Iriel

      • Alverax and his grandfather (not to mention the complicated relationship with his father)

      • Laurel and her brother

  • Magic system (I already raved about it)

    • Humans and not only can use magic!

  • Unique city

    • treetop city, hidden from the world and that is taking advantage of the locals’ ability to use magic in an inventive way!
